Main theme music of Tale

When working with sound effects, one of the most vital parts of development is to create sounds that fit within, and enhances the main game design. Meaning that both the music and sound effects should contribute to the mechanics, aesthetics and dynamics of the game in a balanced and fulfilling way. The sounds can be created and put into place in a way that heightens and highlights the overall sensation of the game, while also being distinct and colourful so that the player remembers them. The music would come to play a main role in the game. It was the music that would tell the player when the avatar was in danger, and when the coast was clear. This was also my task as a sound designer and music composer to fulfil. The intention with the main level music was to create an aural experience for the player that would match the setting of the game and convey the state that the avatar was in, and it also had to contain a memorable melody that the player would remember after playing the Tale. Our intention was to have a melody that would appear in the different states of the music, meaning that there would be a short melodic punch line that would appear in both the dramatic and calm songs. This is often used in movies, a perfect example is in the movie trilogy Lord of the rings where a loop is used throughout the different music states of the movie The level music consists of different instruments from different cultures. Since the game has a medieval setting it was of much importance that the songs in the game would convey that historical setting. Even though the game is not realistic or set in any real culture but rather more of a fantasy setting, it was thought that by using a medieval musical theme it would fit the game setting and be beneficial for the mood of the game The main instruments used in the song were: orchestral percussion, Zurna, Lute, Guitar, and a flute. These instruments were mainly constructed through synth plugins that resembled the instruments, except the guitar track that was recorded with a real guitar. The main benefit with these synth tracks is that they can be manipulated after the recording, also known as midi tracks. The main level song was supposed to keep a calm and adventurous style. This was achieved by keeping the rhythm to a calm level. In comparison to the fighting music that will be described later. |
