Main Theme Song
|
For this week I’ve created some main theme music for the game. What kind of music I wanted to have for the main theme was relatively clear. I had some keywords like “space” and “atmospheric”. The genre Ambient seemed fitting for the keywords I used, and listened to artists like Brian Eno who is a pioneer in the genre. I listened to some of his songs, that had a very slow feel and atmospheric sound. Now with this in mind I didnt want something that was far too slow, since Brian Enos songs take a long time before you actually start appreciate them. Some of them are longer than 8 minutes, and I wanted something that was much shorter. Here is an example: Since the player wont spend so much time on the main menu I wanted the feeling of the song to be delivered quite directly. I listened to the Great Fairy’s Fountain from Zelda: Ocarina of Time and took inspiration from it. It has the rising chords alongside with a bass that lies in the background to get a balance in harmony. I wanted to have a similar structure with my song, but with different sounding instruments. What I considered to be atmospheric and “space” was soft synths with a bit of reverb. Making this song I used a program called Reason made by Propellerhead Software. By using their virtual synth called Thor and NN-XT, a dynamic sampling synth. With the Thor I created the synths. With NN-XT I used a piano for a lead melody. I wanted the lead melody to be piano, so that it stood out from the chords and base. Here is a picture of me using Reason:
Since the song is implemented in game, it needed to have a structure to able to be looped. I did a fairly simple chord progression through out the whole song, that repeated itself. With the piano melody I wanted to create a shape within the song. The synths created a warm feeling and round body, whereas the piano represented something cold and solid. What this relation between the main body (chords and base) and lead (piano) represent could be interpretated in any way of course. Here is the result: Since what feeling you recieve from a certain song or instrument is very subjective, I can only relate to what I myself would feel. However, there are still some type of music that would by many not be categorized as atmospheric, like black metal or something similar. That’s all for this week.
