Lycanthrope: Sounds…

Hello! My name is Mattias Borgqvist and I am currently working on a shoot em up game based on the concept document “A game of beelonging” by group Ouroboros.

This week I want talk about sounds and since I am the lead sound designer in our group this is something that I have been responsible for, making our game feel the right way and make sure that it feels like a harmonious and coherent experience.

Before working on “Beeloning” I had barely touch anything related to sound effects, well I had played some instruments and I do like to sing but making sound effects is something totally different from making music. I have spent tremendous number of hours looking for good sound effects online, but it is very hard to find something that fits, and most good stuff do cost money, so I decided to make most of the effects by myself and with the help of my team members.

First of I started to look at a bunch of tutorials on how to make sounds but there is a lot of them out there and they are often very specific like this is how you make the sound of a gunshot and such. I have been working in a program called Audacity which is a free program made for making Sound and it is quite straight forward I record whatever sound I want like a cute “yeah” sound for our bee and then within the program I can speed it up and higher the pitch so it sounds more cute. For our bear I do the opposite I lower the pitch and add a slower speed to it, so it sounds like a bigger animal. The hardest part in my opinion is to imagine the sound in your hade so you know what sound you need to record so you can come as close to your imagination as possible.

As an artist I would have loved to spend a bit more time on drawing then learning something that I will not work with or use in my future, but someone had to take the bullet and make the sounds for our game. Even if I don’t think I will learn anything useful from making sounds I still think it is quite fun and it is nice to have something to do when I am tired of animating for 6 hours straight.

This was just a general blog post about my view on sound and also a bit of how I make the sounds for our game I hope it was clear and that you enjoy the reading, good bye!
