Scrum on!

For our game, we have been using the Scrum framework to secure steady development.
Scrum is a framework that integrates many ideas from different sources, and the goal is to facilitate an iterative development process (Agile Game Development with Scrum, p. 38). Scrum and Agile development came about as the software industry evolved. For some time, Waterfall development methodology was the go-to methodology for many companies, but as the industry evolved and demands increased, a backlash against this kind of methodology increased as well (Agile Game Development with Scrum, pp. 6, 7, 8, 13). With Scrum, continual improvement and increased productivity are some of the benefits. This is what a Scrum development process looks like:

ScrumWeekIn our case, I believe Scrum has been a great help. We certainly have done our best to use Scrum as much as possible in the development phase so far. The daily meetings in particular, have been successful. Two of the major benefits of doing these meetings are that everybody knows at all time how far the team is and what still needs to be done thereby stimulating continued interest and eagerness to improve.

With the programming minor as well, it can be difficult to manage time properly between working on our game and studying for the minor. However, with Scrum this is made easier. Each Monday our group has met up to plan for the weekly sprint by deciding on a sprint backlog with a set of features, we want to have in the game by the end of the week. This means that we can moderate the workload and that everybody knows at any point what still needs to be done to have a successful sprint.

Another practice of the Scrum framework is to have a potentially shippable version of the game by the end of a sprint. This also helps facilitating interest as it is easy to see where the game is headed while constantly reminding us of what our goal is. This has been further boosted by our wish to prioritize certain features that are more fundamental to the game, by implementing them firstly which is another Scrum practice.

So far, Scrum has helped us achieving our goals and I think it will keep doing so.
