Hellu!
In this entry I will talk about how my team is working with scrum and how it affects my work and development.
Structure
For me scrum has meant more structure in my development. I get a clear overview what needs to be done and when. I think it’s really good to have a product backlog where we list all the assets for the game and then plan each sprint what needs to be done to meet up with the goal for alpha, beta and release. Scrum also means structure for the whole team since we can see each others progress and what everyone is doing at the moment.
Lack of time
Our sprint starts every Monday where we plan what we want to achieve by Friday when we have a sprint review. Sometimes I feel though, that the sprints are too short. And 5 days of work can sometimes turn into 3 days of work due to full day lectures on Mondays and Fridays. If this is the case though, we try to adjust and prioritise what’s important and what we can move to the next sprint. However, having short sprints can be a good thing, since it feels like we’re keeping up the pace and are working more intense on each asset.

Work on weekends
On every sprint planning meeting we estimate our work hours which I think is difficult. I often work more than what I originally planned. The reasons behind this is probably lack of experience and technical issues when it comes to the softwares we are using. And sometimes I have to fix things from earlier sprints which can take some time and lead to working on the weekends. To prevent overwork, I always show rough sketches or ideas to the team to get feedback before I move on to the next step.
Daily communication
The daily stand ups have been a good tool for the group to know what we are doing at the moment and if we are facing any problems. I think it’s good to have daily meetings so everyone gets updated and are on the same page when it comes to the mechanics of the game. Communication is the best tool to prevent misunderstanding and confusion and therefore the daily meetings are good.
Adapt to the team
In my team the programmers and the graphics are working on the same assets each week which is good. For instance, if I work on the flying bee animation, the programmers are working on the bee movement, and by the end of the week we test it in our game. I have to adapt to the team, which means that I don’t work on the things I want to work on at the moment, but the things we need to work on at the moment.
Hacknplan
Tools
My group have tested different working tools like Trello, Google Drive and Hacknplan. Hacknplan is something we are currently using and so far it’s working out good for the team. We have a good overview what’s in progress, what we need to test and what is done. Overall, I think scrum works well for me and my team, we are learning more and more about it and we get more effective.
Lets see where scrum will take us!
