Alpha presentation
|
During this week I have been focusing on preparing for the Alpha presentation. Being a project leader, many people expect you to be the one who are representing the game the group are creating. It is an unwritten rule; a rule you just follow. My team members did not tell me in person to be the representative of the game for the Alpha presentation. However, since this unwritten rule is circulating in the air, I felt a pressure on my shoulders to be the public presenter. Therefore, I took the responsibility to be the person who would be in charge of the presentation. However, my heart was relieved when my programmer Jan wanted to help me with the presentation. He told me he enjoyed being on stage, the opposite of what I felt. By him volunteering to help me, I was less stressed about the presentation and could calm myself down. For many, a presentation is easy to do; to stand on stage and talk in front of people. That it’s not a big deal. However, for me, being on stage is horrifying. The nervousness makes me unable to eat. I can’t focus and I’m scared I will fail. I have had less problems to perform or being on stage when I was younger, but in the later years it have become worse. And since I now am a project leader, the sense of responsibility have gotten even higher. All of sudden I need to represent my group. And my biggest fear is to disappoint them. To do a bad job. To be a bad project leader. However, I know these presentations are great for me to practice. To be better on stage and to be more confident. I know I will be standing on stage more in the future. Therefore, I took the bull by the horns and told myself I will make a great presentation. And I did.
To prepare in the best way, I started writing down the requirements for the Alpha presentation. I then started to think about what I wanted to tell the audience and how to make it interesting. When the text was finished, I read through it over and over again until I knew every word in the right order. However, I needed to create a Powerpoint presentation as well. Making a Powerpoint presentation is something I love. I want to please the audience, not bore them. Therefore, I put a lot of effort in making a nice looking Powerpoint presentation. I have seen several presentations, where the presentation contain zero pictures. Only text and bullet points. Which is boring. So, by adding visuals, the audience get more interested in a presentation and their attention will be directed to the person on stage instead of their phones in their hands. Therefore, I wanted to add more pictures and less text into the presentation. Show the audience what I was talking about, instead of writing it down in bullet points.
The presentation went well and I am very proud of myself. Even if I was very nervous, I can now feel how my self confidence have grown from this experience. I am now looking forward to the next presentation and I am also very excited to grow even more. Learn by doing. |
