The Runes of Kalevala Developer’s Blog III – Wolves of Unusual Size

On the fourth week of development we came to the conclusion that we needed a battle theme for the wolves of unusual size running around the forest of our vertical slice.

I composed this rather breezy piece of 60s spy movie scented folk rumble of which I’m rather pleased. We still can’t afford the licenses to use actual Kanteles on the lead melodies so I’m using a harp which doesn’t sound even remotely like a kantele. But the one available instrument that actually kind of does, the harpsichord, really can’t be played like that. It’s just plain wrong, like playing the piano by strumming the strings inside the wood cabinet.

Anyway, one of the long term goals of this project is to rearrange and rerecord the entire soundtrack using actual Finnish folk musicians. Then we’ll get some real scandinavian pizzazz and I can stop banging my head into the wall trying to edit the MIDI in a way that at least somewhat resembles human activity.

In order to make the track feel bearable in headphones during prolonged playtesting sessions I have gone way low on the compression and used an impulse reverb to simulate an orchestra recording space. I’ve also spent a lot of time tweaking Cubases MIDI editing plugins to simulate the randomness and cosntant variation of human performance. It’s no replacement for the genuine article but it’s at the very least much better than the deadpan musical stylings of full velocity MIDI.

Next up is creating the soundtrack for a giant frog unlawfully occupying a boat. Did anyone say Polka?
