Landlord´s Quest

Landlord´s Quest
Boardgame
Advanced Game Design Course

The last assignment of my course Advanced Game Design was to together with a team of five classmates in two weeks time analyse six boardgames gain inspiration and then create a own board game within the time period of two weeks. Within this time period team Ghoul created a boardgame called Landlord’s Quest.

About the boardgame Landlord´s Quest
Landlord´s Quest is a world building game where 2-6 players have to build a world with tiles to compete against eachother and complete quests and win the game. The existing tiles are woods, mountains, arable lands and water tiles. In order to complete the quests the player has to combine these different land tiles and create the desired pattern for the quest criteria. If the player succeeds she will be awarded by the quest points and be able to move her meeple on the score board. Throughout the game there should always be three main quests visible for all players on the table until the quest pile is empty. Each player also receives a hidden quest only visible for the player and upon completion the player receivs a new private quest card.

Tile swapping
Since the player is only allowed a miximum of two tiles in her hand she can either choose to put both tiles out on the board, pass or swap any tile with any other player. The swapping is only allowed one time each turn and only with one tile.

The Inspiration
Before we started to create our own boardgame we had two weeks to play through and analyse a total of six boardgames. From these six boardgames we then decided which mechanic and type of boardgame we liked the most and from that game we took inspiration for our own. The game we all liked the most was the game Carcassonne which is a world building game with tiles were the players claim the land in order to win the game. We choose the mechanic of creating a world with tiles since we found this a fun and interesting mechanic to have in a game. We were fascinated by the way a world could take form in different directions depending on how the players choose to place their tiles. We were excited to create a world creating boardgame on our own. And this was how Landlord´s Quest was born.
