During both of our group’s playtesting sessions we have received critique about our controls. We have also received a lot of critique about the information regarding those controls. We have received critique against the information regarding our mission objective and gameplay features such as having to “sell” the valuables before actually receiving money. People have had trouble finding where they can sell these items, where you end the mission, why the game is on a timer, how the hud is working etc.. This week I decided to clarify some of these aspects by designing some screens. We had received feedback from Marcus about the information on controls in our design document. What I did was creating a super simple colour coded layout of the controls to be featured in our design document. What we also wanted to do was to add a “how to play” menu which you can access from the main menu. This menu explains the controls and some of the story. What we have then chosen to do is to make a simple information screen to show before the game starts. This is to make sure that the players have at least seen the goals and gameplay before they jump right in to it. We figured that most people wouldn’t bother clicking the how to play menu before the game starts so this way we can hopefully clear out some of the confusion that would otherwise emerge. The screen simply tells you the objective of the game and how the game is supposed the play out. You pick up valuables to then drop them off in order to fill up your money meter in order to win. You have five minutes to do this. What you can do is to either exit the level as soon as your money goal is reached and before the police shows up or you can use every second available to you to try and get as many points as you can, exceeding the full money meter. This will then be your high score. The start screen also show some simple icons to make sure the player understands how some of the valuables may look like. It also gives the player some tips that can help. It shows some of the powerups and explains that they are consumed if used, and if not used will be available to sell at the drop off point in order to get a lot of money. |
