Blogpost V – Fancy Mansion

This week on implementing items with the avatar animations.

My task this week has been to implement all the stealable items with the protagonist avatar animations. This week was a bit different since we have the Beta presentation in Friday and our sprint plan stretches through the weekend. This meant I had to prioritize what artefacts to do first in order to maybe implement them in the game in time for the presentation. My tactic thou were to first implement the easier items, like the painting and vase, just so we could have as many items as possible to show. Luckily I had already drawn the items from different sides during another sprint plan which saved me a lot of work this week.

The Otto van Fancy’s Painting

painting_frontI started off with the portrait of the games only antagonist since it had the friendliest angles to work with since the thiefavatar is simply holding it in front of him. Since this was my first implementation I had to decide whether to animate the arms to or just let painting_side_backgroundthem be static. I tried to make them move a bit differently than the rest of the body at first, just to see if it was necessary. Unfortunately I did not manage to make it look as good as I wanted so I simply went with static arms this time around but if there is time later on I might change it. I finally came up with an animation I liked and I was pleased with the position of the painting. The painting also works as a sort of shield and because of its sentimental value to Mr Fancy, he will not fire at the player while they are holding it and facing the old man.

The old and fancy vase

This one was a bit more difficult than the painting as both the thief and the vase have round shapes and did not really fit with each other. Therefore it took a lot of tinkering and one night’s sleep to figure out a way for them to hold it without too big changes between the different directions. I was first thinking of making the avatar holding it in front of them, but that complicated the side views since the vase was too big to fit. I later thought of making them hold it under one of their arms but that complicated the front view since again, the vase was too big to fit. I finally found a mix between these two options that worked much better, but I still believe that there is no way to apply it perfectly.
