Powerups and powerdowns
|
Before the beta is due we need to make sure that all of our in game features are implemented. At the moment we only have some of those features. Our character can throw glow sticks to light up the path around him and he can use one powerup. The powerup is used to hide from the bad guy(Otto). The powerup is a bear rug which you can pick up, and if you turn it in with the other valuables, it will generate quite a nice reward for you. If you choose not to turn it in however, but instead use it as a powerup, it will be rendered worthless. It will also only be usable one time. When activated, the player hides beneath the bear rug and Otto will be unable to detect you. In our design document we have also mentioned at least 5 other powerups or powerdowns. (with no beneficial effects) This week I drew the rest of the powerups. We have a suit of armor which will be worth a lot of money, but it will be very heavy and make the player easier to detect. The Candle lets the player see more of his surroundings, without having to throw glow sticks. The painting is used as a shield. Otto would never shoot his precious self-portrait. The clock is more of a powerdown. It is very heavy but it is very valuable. The Vase or the pot(witch ever one we decide to go with) has a similar effect. It will get you points. The design is pretty simple. We have tried to use gold as an indication of valuable items. The reason we did this was to make the player spot the items easier in the dark and also didn’t want the player to feel confused about whether he could or couldn’t pick an object up. The objects are designed to look simple. There are not a lot of textures and complicated lighting. If any lighting is applied it is supposed to come from above. The objects are also painted in a very low resolution. 64×64 pixels or 64×128 pixels. (They may not appear in their actual sizes here) The limited resolution makes it hard to add subtle details and that is why we have decided to skip most of them. Now it’s time for the coders to do the easy job. Making the powerups do stuff in the game. |
