BGP – Day 35

Continue to learn Houdini FX

Today I spent the rest of my time learning Houdini, which is great and I really like the program. Since it will enable me to render out nice smoke and fire textures to use in our game. BUT, the only free version that I can use is the Houdini Apprentice version. Which doesn’t allow me to render out pictures over a certain size, so it’s hard to make 8×8 grid texture without going over that size. Even if I could do that, a big watermark comes with it, which will affect the particles I create.

I understand why they have these restrictions to their free version but it’s sad since as a student I can’t create particles and add them to a project I’m working on even though it’s not a commercial product and is part of a school project. They do have a educational license which will only send out licenses to teachers, while the students will suffice with the apprentice version, if I understood their rules correctly. I have emailed a teacher if they might be able to help us in this matter since VFX are a big part of our game, but other than that I will have to wait and see.

I still started to watch a fire tutorial for Houdini to get the basics, so If i can manage  to get a license for it, I could get a fire particle up and running faster. I’ll also spend this night looking into creating some low hanging dust, to get our levels some more volume.

PS. I remembered that I also changed the mask texture for the life material effect, so that it looks more aesthetically correct.
