Eye of the Critters

The eyes are one of the most important things used for communication. If our game is going to be about bonding with a cute little animals, the eyes are a must have in order to establish a connection.

While we know that this is a fact I will not lie, our original concept we did not want to add eyes as we wanted to be a bit more experimental and play around with the body language a bit more, but as we quickly realized we just don’t have time to work around it, so you have to compromise and thus we did.

The eyes are just simple planes skinned to the heads of the critters, they are floating a bit and are angled so that it would look good from different angles, which was an issue we previously had when trying to visualize how the eyes would fit our critters and look good from all angles. By doing this we also obtained a more cartoony style which will go well with out toon shader once it’s implemented.

Luckily we can reuse the same material for all the critters, it took some iterations to make sure that all of the planes fit the critters correctly but it was time well spent. We haven’t gotten the script yet for the animated textures so as of right now it is till quite uncertain how the final spreadsheet for the eyes is going to be constructed but that’s an issue for future me.

The drawings for the eyes were just made in Paint tool Sai, this software wasn’t chosen for a specific reason other than it is the one I’m the most fluent in and this work faster so when time is a factor I went with what I felt the most comfortable with.
