Neon Skies – Week 6

Destroyed Drone

For week 6 I started with postponing my work on the cliffs and instead I divided the drone into more components so that our coder can separate them when it is destroyed. Most of the effects will be made in Unity, but in the texture alone I darkened it and turned off the emissive (light) map to give a slight color change on it as it explodes as that will contribute to the sense of it being destroyed.

Once that was done, I started with the metal ore which is the second mine-able resource in the game. I made two versions of it, one that is whole and another that is partially gone to give a progression to the look while you mine.
We wanted it to have a glow like the crystals so that it would stick out in the environment, but we also wanted it to look as hard as the cliffs, so we played around with 3D Coat which allows you to make a cube and then free-form it until you find something you like and then you can apply it to make it into geometry. After that it was just tweaking with some cutting tools until we liked it.

Lastly this week I worked on another drone which will autonomously traverse the map and mine resources, the players will be able to destroy it and take its content, however what exactly it does etc. is still in the concept stage.
We wanted its style to remind the players of their mining drone as they should both be made by the same faction, but we wanted it to look hostile, so less round, more things sticking out and more edges. We are also planning on its light and mining laser being red to more clearly show it as being hostile.
