Summary of my first two weeks

Hereby I declare my blog started!
My first two weeks here at Gotland has been a lot of things. Stressful, interesting and confusing, but most of all fun. We went head first into the courses To communicate in speech and writing and Game analysis and game design – introduction.

Game analysis and game design – introduction
If I were to analyze a game two weeks ago I do not think a lot of good would come from it. “The graphics are nice, and uh, the story is kinda cool” is probably what you would hear. After two weeks of lectures, seminars and assignments though, I am now in a position to say for example “I found that this mechanic created this and this dynamic, which produces this aesthetic”. We have over the two last weeks gone over:

  • Objects, properties, systems and the relationships between these three.
  • MDA, a model used to analyze the Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics of a game.
  • Documentation and writing academically.
  • And a bunch of fun around the previous bullet points.

We have also taken the existing card game Sissyfight and altered the fiction and mechanics to better the aesthetics of the game. Instead of being girls on a school yard bullying each other you now play as a country in nuclear war with other countries. We felt that this way, some of the playable cards made more sense, and we also added some cards to further the “realism” of warfare.

Looking at games as a producer instead of as a consumer has been very interesting. The amount of thought, work, testing and failing that creates a good game is unbelievable, but with hard work comes a lot of fun, I think. Even though it is already quite a lot to do, and it will probably get even harder, I am truly excited about the future here at Campus Gotland.
