Academic writing & Essays
This week, as said in previous post, started with two lectures on academic writing, documenting and pitching your games. We were given an assignment to design an Impending Doom game, which means that you cannot win, you will always lose at some point. We were then asked to write an essay on this game and on our ideas about it. Writing an essay on a game design was a bit tricky, since it is not regularly done, so we had no references in that sense.
Anyhow, I came up with a game about defusing a bomb via a computer. The players task is to type a long defuse code into the computer. By regularly, and automatically, looking at a phone on the right of the computer, the player gets the code that is supposed to go into the computer. The intervals between looking at the phone and the computer slowly decreases until the player types wrong to many times and the bomb goes off.
Workshop with Ernest Adams
On thursday, we first had a lecture on game design with Ernest Adams, which was very interesting. It was noticeable he had been in the industry for a long time, and he had a lot of interesting views on games and game design. After the lecture, he had us design a game from a dream that was given to us. We got the dream; “I want to be a tv-reporter in war. (I cannot use weapons or violence)”. So we started thinking about what this dream actually meant, what is the person with this dream looking for? Obviously we could not be sure, but we thought that the main focuses of the game should be finding the best story to report and doing this in a stressful and dangerous environment. Seeing as we were only to design the game, and not actually build it, we had total freedom with the design. Therefore, we created a stealth based detective game, where the quests mainly revolved around sneaking around to find information for your reportage or clues on how to progress. Friday afternoon we presented our games for the whole class.
Next week we will start reverse engineer games and test to see if we have done it correctly. This concept is very new to me, therefore I do not have a lot of information on the subject at this point.
