Green Warden – week one

So this week we begun working on the space shooter project again. Our team chose the concept for a game called Green Warden. This is their one page design:

The first thing we did was to read the concept document and take notes on everything we liked and the things we’d like to change. Some of the changes we’ve discussed is to change the ye olden English forest to more of a jungle, to represent the types of flowers/units the player can use as cards which then can be combined, and to change the goblins to steampunk robots.

Most of our energy this week has been focused on making a game state flow chart and to fill out the scrum backlog we were given.

Game states are the different modes the game will be in, for example Main Menu, Options and PlayState. By mapping out all of the game states and how they relate to each other we’ll have a clear view of what the game will look like when it’s done.

Scrum is a method that helps a team perform a task more efficiently. It’s a bit difficult to explain, but basically it lets you set minor goals that are more agile instead of larger goals that are definite. With scrum it’s easier to change your plan and your game when you realize if something does or doesn’t work. In our backlog we write out all the tasks we have to do during the project – program character movement, design levels, make character and enemy animations etc. – and give each task a value. The value is how important the task is to a finished game. A walking animation for the player character, for example, is very important since it’s a large part of the game. Main menu background art, however, is not as important. When we actually begin these tasks, we simply go through the list, starting with the highest value tasks.

Personally, I have begun drawing some concept art, since I am the lead artist.

Our game is a tower defense where you play as a dryad defending their forest from robots who seek to cut it down and build factories. As the dryad you protect Life Trees, which are the source of all life in the forest. From the Life Trees you can get seeds, which grows into flowers that have different abilities and attacks which can help you in your quest.

The style I have drawn these images in is not representative of the style the actual game will be in, this was more an attempt to jot down some ideas quickly. We have an idea of how we’d like the art style to look, but I don’t want to spoil anything yet.
