First Week of Concept Art!

Wooha! It has been a long week but I made it through. It won’t be easy to study 200% during the Space Shooter Project, but I won’t give up so easily. Concept seems to contain everything I could have possibly wished for while signing up to that course. I have already met new friendly people, very talented both in traditional and digital illustrations.

This week we learned that the intentions in a drawing is what drives the Concept Artist to continue. Without any purpose why should we paint? Of course we paint to get better but at the same time when drawing concept art it has to have a meaning.

This week the case study was “Mightier than the Sword” a short story written by our teacher Leo Sandberg. The short story is about the samurais in Japan close to the end of 1800-century. The story is about Oishi who receives a book about French revolution and gets inspirid by the french’s revultionary ideas. Reading this book makes him a traitor but well knowing this fact he still continues to spread the french’s message.
I won’t spoil the ending since you might one day read it 😉

Anyways, this week’s assignment was to create a Portfolio, intent briefing text about ones goals with the course and case study, Moodboard to the case study and finally a key scene to the case study.

          Intent Briefing           –             Moodboard

The key scene I choose to draw a concept of was Oishi hunting his friend Hayashi down and stabbing him to death since his (yes, I chose my Oishi to be a man) friend betrayed him. As you can see, I have horses in my Moodboard. I first intended to draw Oishi jumping of his horse to draw his katana and then attack Hayashi. I then realised this would not look good in only one key shot. For this I would have needed to draw more key frames like for an animation and this was not the assignment. So I ended up with Oishi jumping up high in the air with his katana in the quest to kill his surprised friend.

Week 2 we are supposed to finish this key scene (That will be when all the magic happens! Shadow and light values, finish the background and give form to my charaters!)
