Blog Post 4.

The past week had not been good, there was a major setback. My Photoshop file, which contained all original assets was corrupted. Luckily many of the old versions of assets such as the background was available from google docs, but my new version of the ship for instance was only saved as a JPEG so there was some work to be done in restoring it. This in itself is not a major issue, however it meant that my animation of the ship was postponed until further notice.

On a good note I improved on the graphics for the boss. I wanted the boss to look really powerful, and a way I though of communicating that strength was to make it look really old. As if it was the father of all the other enemies which engages the player prior to his appearance. I did this by adding some flabby skin under the chin. I also added a rugged leathery texture. I did this by warping separate leather texture around the base colors and mixed with some exposure values. I also made sure the teeth where spaced and worn out, to give the feeling that this boss has been in many battles before. The most important detail however is the eyes, I felt like the character I sort of bland as a whole, but glowing eyes of contrasting color would really make the stare stick out and as a result make the boss more intimidating.

I created segments for the boss as well, so that it could be animated with its full body. This was mostly done for an attack we had imagined where the screen would widen and the boss would fly around the screen and shoot projectiles. We though this would be an “Oh shit” moment for the player and that i would not be to difficult to implement from a programming perspective since the segments simply needed to be connected and follow the head.Bossprojectile.png
I also made a Projectile for the boss for its second attack mode. This was important because the boss was quite boring when it could only attack with charge. I though ti should be purple since all the other enemies are that color. I added a light center and a black gradient around it so it would look dangerous, as if it is emitting some kind of energy.
