Animation and Assets

Creating the characters for the game was a challenge. I have never made an animation before and I was really scared that I wasn’t going to be able to perform. All my worries was put to sleep once I started. My fear was hindering me.

Just keeping the 12 principles in mind was really helpful.

Animation assets

We needed two different crystals to clarify they did different things for the player. We started with only the red crystal but after the first play testing we realized that it was important that the blue crystals are positive and gives the player bullets. The red crystals are weak spots of the enemy and by destroy get them you get a different aesthetic experience.

 

The Avatar

The player has a very simple moment with just the sail moving back and forth.

Weapons

The default weapon, in order to power up this weapon the player has to destroy blue crystals.

The Harpoon

The most powerful weapon that the player uses to destroy the crystals.

Dying animation

Once the player loses all his life the ship dies in an explosion.

The Whale

Getting into the animation of the whale was intimidating because it was going to be one of the most important entity of the games. I really wanted the whale to be a scary figure but still be the majestic and beautiful creature it is. The whale is a beautiful creature to animate.

I really put in a lot of research in order to capture the majestic whale of the ocean. I spent hours just observing different videos from National Geographic and just soak in the movements and feeling of the whale in the ocean.

We wanted to enemies to look sickly and as if they were infected by a parasite, so they have red crystals sticking out of their skin. Making the colors for the whale I considered what colors you would consider sickly, green and purple.

The whale has armor as protection. In different levels you shoot the big crystals on the back to remove the whales armor. Once you removed all the armor plates you get to face the whale in the final level.

Underneath the armor the whale has soft spots that you will shoot at in the final boss to kill it.

The Final Concept

Seeing everything coming together is an amazing feeling. While doing the separate pieces it’s hard to get a feeling of where you’re heading but when we installed the cogs into the machine it’s great to see it working. Of course there are gonna be a few things you will have to fix but it’s easier to find when put in perspective. Of course not all you make will be implied to the official game.

So far this assignment have been an incredible experience, I feel like I if our group had a problem we talked about it and fixed it. Together we have made an incredible concept of a game and everybody had an input.
