ScrumPost

Welcome to week three of the blog adventure! This time, tune in for a reflection about scrum.

In team Qilin we have practiced scrum, as it is one of the course requirements. I have never used scrum before, nor has (I think) anyone else on the team, which has made this something of an experiment. It’s worked out decently for us, some weeks have been better than others, but generally it’s been fine.

The daily standups have been helpful, I personally need to have clear objectives to properly do a task, and that is exactly what the daily standups have done! We try to do them in person as often as we can, but on the days we have our minor classes or something else comes in the way, we do them via slack. We do a lot of communication via slack, it’s where we post various assets and updates to keep the entire team on the same page. Our team has a lot of communication issues in general, but the things that happen on slack are probably the most universally understood.

I think scrum has helped us with communication and organization the most. As previously mentioned, we have a lot communicative problems, and the rigid structure of scrum doesn’t leave a lot to be misunderstood. We have still had some internal issues with the amount of work that has to be done each sprint and personal responsibility. The sprint and planning elements of scrum have also been helpful, without them we would have been buried under an insurmountable mountain of tasks that have to be done, but thanks to scrum we can pretend that isn’t the case and instead focus on bitesize chunks of work. We have had some problems with work-time estimations, personally I can say that I’m not great at timing things, since I don’t always work non-stop. When it comes to art, sometimes I run out of inspiration, or I simply cannot seem to be happy with anything I do. When that happens I tend to spend some time doing something mindless or looking at reference pictures, which makes time estimation hard. Do you count the time looking for references into the work time? Technically it is for the work, but it could also theoretically be done without references.

All in all, I think scrum has helped us as a team to communicate in clear and boxed in ways. It’s forced us to learn some habits, which has been helpful, as have the sprint, and planning elements. In the future, I belive knowing scrum will be a great asset, and it has certainly helped us!
