Blog post 2: Music

Hello there. This week I’m going to talk about the process of finding the right music for the game “Depth”. Because the game we are creating is supposed to be a survival horror game, the music is very important for the setting. Though we cannot just take any horror music we can find. Since most of the songs we could find are very slow paced, it will not fit with the theme of “last leg”, which means “RUN!”. For the process of trying to find the right kind of music, me and the lead sound designer Carl Hvarfvenius Blomgren, created a sound effect document on Google drive, where we would put in every song and sound effect we would find. This to make it easy for the both of us to listen to what the other found, but also for the rest of the team to have easy access if they wanted to check on our progress. The way that we first searched for songs, was to search for royalty free songs. When doing this, we found a total of six songs, though one was discarded quickly, due to not being the right kind of sound. In the end we decided to discard all but two songs, due to the same reason. The two songs we decided to keep in consideration are “Extinction Level Event” by Jingle Punks ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNFNOEi9QV4 ) and “Night Runner” by Audionautix ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqziXctMG0I ). Even though these songs are not horror, they can still fit with the survival and last leg theme that the game has. Though, by searching only for royalty free songs, there is a lot of difficulties finding what it is you want. To solve this problem we asked for help. One answer we got to this problem was to search for songs under the tag “creative commons”. This means that we can use the songs, as long as we credit the creator. This has opened a lot more doors, not only in finding music, but also sound effects overall. When writing this, we have got a lot of options to choose from, but we have not decided on a song to use for the main level of our game. Hopefully this blog post can also help other teams, by giving them a better search option than “royalty free”. |
