5SD064 Hanna Aho Lind – The progress of making a underwater mine and it´s explosion!
|
Some weeks ago I was tasked with making an object to interact with, which we decided would be an exploding underwater mine. Since our game neither have a comic style or a realistic style I had to rely on our brushes in photoshop to help me find the middle ground when designing the mine. Me and the Lead artist had decided on a style which we thought that we both could acchieve, and also set some brushes and file sizes to work with. First I decided to get a better understanding of how world war two underwater mines would look, since it would be more historically accurate, because that is the time in history when most underwater mines were planted. And it would make more sense that more of them would be left untouched deep down in caves (more than newer types of mines anyway).
When I had quickly sketched three concept designs I turned to my group through slack and asked which one they liked the most. When voting they agreed on the number one to be the best concept and for it to be the one which I should continue on.
I went for a bit rusty and mean look for the design, with green algea growing upon it and floating around the spikes. I remembered that it would be attached to the ground and through a chain, so I designed a conceptbrush which would help me make the chain come together faster than when I would draw every ring by itself. And no, you can´t have the brush, go make your own brushes in Photoshop! With the mine done it was time to proceed to the animation of it exploding. A challenging task for someone who mostly draw human faces, and not metalbombs turning into a firecloud.
A first (crappy) concept were made but later refined into an actual sprite-sheet which I actually think looks kinda nice:
My group found the work well-made and that it fit nicely with the aesthetics of the game, which is ultimately what I was going for. The approval of the whole group is important for me. A bit dismaying was the fact that we had a lecture about how to draw mechanical explosions much later in the course, which I could´ve used well in the animation for the exlpoding mine. But nothing is too late, I will instead implement my new knowledge for the beta-version of the game! |
