Power-up mechanic
|
Our group chose the concept for the game ”Behemoth” there you play as the biggest and most powerful ship in existence. You need to escape and with your fire power and stature to blow a path through the forces that are doing everything to not let you get away. Our power-up is two laser beams that are shoot from the two side guns that kills all the enemies it get contact with. It actives when you have killed one hundred enemies which shows up in a power-up bar on the screen, activate it by pressing the ”E” button. The laser beams collides into each other before it disappears, activated time is two seconds so it’s enough time to wipe out the enemies on the screen but not be to powerful so they destroys the second wave of enemies. We choose that power-up to make the player feel powerful and clean up the map, with using the laser beams. The design I needed to rush because of the little time and missing time from the graphic students. The power-up We first thought about having a power-up to the shield with a 50% expansion. With the shield power-up the player would be able to defend the whole Behemoth and the challenge would disappear completely. We still want the player to have a challenge and never be able to relax and lose concentration of the game. A power-up with a new weapon would give something new to the game but not be to powerful but still give extra power and reward to the player for two seconds. If I could do it all over again I would have match it better with the rest of the graphics in the game and have more than one power-up to make the game more depth and interactivity. Our biggest problem with the game was the game feel, it was one diminutional and nothing really new and exiting did happen. From the final play testing we got a lot of feedback on why we did the power-up like that and many did not understand how to use it or when to use it. You needed to kill 100 enemies which nobody did because they focused on killing the bigger and fewer enemies so they would never get up to 100 kills.
