Rune Mages – VFX

Rune Mages

Rune Mages is a game that can be described as a mix between X-Com and Magicka. It’s a strategy- based tactical combat game that takes place in a turn based style and is being made with Unity. The player controls two mages who have three different runes at their disposal to create spells. Combining runes creates more powerful spells in their fight against the demons who have emerged for bellow the ground.

Learning the Unity Particle System

My role in this project is Lead Visual Effects/Particle Effects and as you might understand form the description of the game, there will be a lot of visual effect (spells). During the first week of the project I had to learn the particle system of  Unity since I had never worked with it (or any other particle system in that matter) before. I started out by following a bunch of tutorials on YouTube just to learn what the system is capable of and where all the settings are. There are a lot of good tutorials on YouTube that are simple to follow I quickly had some cool effects ready. None of these were of final game quality but I understood how to create a visual effect using the particle system.

These are some of the VFXs that I managed to produce during the first week of working with the Unity particle system. Most of them were created by following the tutorials step by step and ending up with a similar result as the tutor. At the end of the week i felt confident enough to start experimenting with the features of the particle system, but it didn’t always turn out as I wanted. Despite this I was so familiar with the system that I was able to google most of the issues I had and was able to understand the solutions that were suggested by fellow Unity users. Also, I learned about the limitations of the system and what was not possible to do using only the particle system.
