Neon Skies

Week 4-5

Hello! My name is Erik Levin and I am in the second year of the Game Design, Graphics, program at Uppsala University, Campus Gotland.

Im working on a game called Neon Skies.

In my last entry i ended it with that was going to start with the animations. This took longer than i thought due to the shear amount of different animations that was needed so i decided to compile two weeks of work into one entry this time.

Above you can see a few of the different takes of the different animations that we needed. I worked closely with håkan, our programmer here as well as with Fabian, our lead artist. I worked on the animations, plotted them to the mesh and then i gave them to Fabian who looked at them from the right perspective in Unity, told me what to change and after i changed it and he approved, i gave it to Håkan who started to implement them in the real game.

This was a very  time consuming process. With a lot of small tweeks everywhere. The challenge was to make the animations look good as the would look in the game, however when animation in motionbuilder, it was hard to get the right perspective so to speak. What looked good in motionbuilder, did not look good in unity, and therefore all the small tweeks.

I found the attack animations the hardets, but also the most fun. The challenge was to create them so that they arms did not cover to much of the player vision but they should be noticable enough and  destinctive from eachother so that the player know whats happening.

Another challenge was that i had to split the animations for and action in different stages. For example, the animation for the bow attack was split into, bringing the bow up, holding or aiming the bow and finally releasing the bow. This made it easier for Håkan to implement them and time them with other things like sound and graphic feedback. For the bow there was a light trail that would symbolize the arrow.

Thats all for me this time, next time i will begin with the 3d person mesh.

Thanks

Erik LEvin
