Big Game Project (BGP) 2017

Since a couple of weeks ago now I began the last course of my second year of Game design and Graphics here at Uppsala University – Campus Gotland and is one of the larger courses throughout the whole programme. It’s called Big Game Project and as the name suggest we are going to be working on a game in teams until the end of this semester.

The game me and my team has been working on is called Fast Gear which is, in short, an isometric 3D racing game with story elements that affect the racing itself and vice versa. We’re set to have a very 80’s inspired theme and artstyle with vibrant colors and lots of inspiration from shows and cartoons that were popular during that time such as Knight Rider, Akira, Back to the Future and so on.

During the first couple of weeks we mostly worked on pre production and planning. Since I am one of the graphic artist in the team I was mostly part of the discussions regarding the artstyle and anything related to it with the other two artists as well as the lead designer. We also decided our different roles (Lead artist, 3D artist, 2D artist etc.) and which areas each of us would be working on. I was tasked to be responsible for the cars in general for the game so this means that my work would be designing the cars as well as making the finished 3D assets that are going to be used in the finished game (modeling, texturing etc.).

As the game is going to have an 80’s theme the cars has to have appropiate designs. I have been taking a lot of inspiration from existing cars that were frequent during that time which was not strictly limited to cars made from 1980 to 1990 since there were some cars that were made before that got really popular or even regarded iconic later on during the 80’s. For the most part I want to keep our cars for the game original but with some resemblance to the most iconic cars of the 80’s. The reason is mostly because we’re obviously not allowed to use existing cars because of licensing but I personally think the opportunity to design original cars might prove to be fun as well as useful practice. The way I mostly work, for this part of the process, is that I usually use an existing car as base and from there on make my own design decisions, sometimes mixing designs from other cars. This sometimes means that the silhouettes of the original existing cars stay almost the same while still not being too recognizable.

That’s it for now, I’ve begun modeling and texturing some of the cars but more on that next time.
