Enemy death sprite

We decided in the group that we would not have a death animation for the enemy fish, instead we would have some particle effects where the enemy would explode into a cloud of skeleton bits. So to begin with I made a lot of different skeleton parts so that we would have a few different options. I also made some different cloud sprites that we could use to make it seem like the fish exploded. These didn’t feel necessary in the end and therefor we scrapped them. We liked the fish bones and implemented them in the game, but after our beta presentation where Marcus said that they looked like nail clippings, we just couldn’t get that thought out of our head so I went and thought of ways to change them. I decided to go for a more exaggerated look to fit in with the enemies and made a spine that had more shape to it, with some bums where the ribs would attach.
After testing and discussing with the team, I changed the fish head to just have the eye sockets left and to add some teeth to make it feel more like a skull. I also made some eyeballs since making eye sockets would mean that the eyes had fallen out. It was really difficult to make the heads look like fish skulls and I’m not completely happy with them but I think they might look good in the game since they will be very small.
The coloring for these sprites were very easy, I made the outlines in black and filled them in with white. the only things that had more color were the original smoke clouds and the eyes. For the smoke clouds I made a lot of different ones. I made them have the base color of the fish and then changed things like opacity and the color of the outlines. For now these sprites are what we have for the skeleton cloud, they have not been tested in unity yet so we don’t know if we have to change them again. |
