This week I have been reworking the main character in our game. As I previously mentioned, our other artist recently left, and she was the one who made the main concept and sprite for the character. However, now when we are approaching the end of the project we see that we need to rework some of the assets.

The original concept document said that the main character was supposed to be an elderly woman. We decided to stick with this concept.

However, the more we used the original sprite the more we realized that we wanted the hitbox to be smaller. This was hard to implement since the character is standing up and we had orbs flying around it. We then decided to make the character sit down instead, minimizing the whole sprite.

Since we want the theme of the game to be inspired by Hinduism and Buddhism, and those religions focus a lot on meditation, I made the woman sit with crossed legs as if she was meditating. This was kind of hard to make, and made me look at various reference photos in order to make the legs be placed where I wanted them to be.

This is the sprite Nelly made.

I decided to make her clothes stay the same purple as it was from the beginning. This was in order to make everything a bit easier. The orbs when the player have not absorbed any powers are purple, and the projectiles for this state is purple as well, to match how her clothes looked. I thought it was better to make as small changes as possible, and thus I kept the colour of the clothes the way it was.

When my group had accepted this sprite, I animated it. I wanted it to look like she is flying and the wind is hitting her in the face, so I animated the hair and the bottom of her coat. I figured the rest of the body would not be seen as much. I will have to animate the arm to make it look like she is shooting, but I will do that tomorrow.
