Week 6

Preparation for Beta Presentation

For this week’s blogpost I will talk about my preparations for the beta presentation that will be held next week on Monday. When my group and I decided on who would do the presentation for the alfa, I figured my team members would have more knowledge about details of the game, and therefore would be more competent than I in answering questions from our teacher following the presentation. We later noticed that most groups had chosen their project manager to do the presentation, so when it came to the beta presentation it felt expected for me to take on that task.

I started my prep with having a sit down with my group where we discussed what we want to present on Monday. The subjects we are assigned to address are as following;

  • Introduction of the group.
  • 3 things that have gone well since last time.
  • 3 things that have taken a turn for the worse.
  • Give examples on how these things could have been prevented.
  • What will the group focus on for the next milestone?

Our discussion was very helpful and we managed to summarize it to answer the questions. For me it was important that I would not construct a presentation all by myself, but for everyone to be included and have an opinion about what we want to communicate to our teachers and classmates.

As a second step of the preparation I have started to work on a PowerPoint presentation. My stance on whether I think PowerPoints are a valuable tool to use or not is quite divided. I am of the opinion that they are mostly just some kind of security for the speaker to “hide behind”, and they usually look really boring… But I suppose it could provide some visual value, and I have chosen to use one since we are presenting “3 good things” etc. and I think in cases like that, it is good for the audience to have the list summarized visually.

During the weekend I will form a suitable disposition for what to say. Since the presentation shall be no more than ten minutes, including a demonstration of the game, I will have to keep myself very brief. To stay within the time limit I think it will help to have a loose plan on what to say, to avoid getting too wordy.
