One boss becomes two
|
Stella Crawford from Team Nazgul here! In this blog entry I’m going to continue on the topic of redesigning the bosses for Burn Witch, Burn. Last week I talked about the Witch Hunter and mentioned the final boss who ended up splitting into two halves and becoming a queen in our interpretation. I made these designs last week but I haven’t done much else than cleaning up animation frames this week, which isn’t very interesting to write or read about so I picked something else. My Queen Redesign
In the concept document the final boss was a large, bearded king with big armor and an even bigger shield and sword. There was nothing wrong with this design and I had already started sketching that very design and tweaking it making it my own, until me and our scrum master were discussing having some female bad guys too. I immediately fell in love with the idea of having the final boss be a queen instead of a king.
Based on the original king’s beard, I assumed he was an older gentleman so I made my Queen an older lady too. I gave her a stern and scarred face, to display that she has seen much and defended her queendom first hand. My “research” of real medieval queens was pretty much just google image search but I think she looks realistic enough for a game about actual witches. My use of references for her armor were also pretty limited. All I knew was that I would avoid the so called “boob-plate armor” often seen in fantasy games like the plague in my design. I gave her a very blue and cold color scheme to create a contrast between her and Gillis, the main character witch. My Gillis design. I like to think her hair catches fire only when she is using her magic powers so this is what she looks like grounded.
Gillis is all earthly and fiery colors, so the Queen is all icy blues.
I talked about in last week’s blog how the Witch Hunter boss also ended being a lady when the original idea was that only one of the bosses would be. I however ended up liking both my designs so much I was very reluctant to let either one go so my group were nice and let me have my way. I however started thinking that there could be a king after all.
I had another talk with our scrum master who mentioned there could be a powerful queen ruling behind the scenes. Once again I was enamored with the idea.
I started picturing the final boss scene in my head. You finally meet the dreaded King and fight him. To your surprise he doesn’t actually look so tough is defeated rather easily. Suddenly you hear heavy footsteps and the frankly giant Queen steps into the scene, filled with blind rage towards you for killing her sweet husband.
I’m not sure if we would even have time to make this a reality, but gosh, it would be so cool.
My king design
For my King I followed the concept art more closely, but made him cuter and nonthreatening. I gave him a royal red color scheme to contrast with the queen, but his red is more “candy colored” than Gillis is. He wears similar armor to the Queen, but comes equipped with a impractical cape and a tender face that hasn’t seen much battle. He has the same hear curl as his wife, which I find rather adorable actually. Even if these two are the villains of our game, I can’t help but to “d’aww” at the idea of them being a cute and healthy couple. Too bad Gillis and the player will put an end to their wonderful married life. |
