Figuring Out the Scope
|
Hello dear reader and welcome to my second blog post! One of our main concerns when it comes to our project is figuring out the scope. We simply do not know how much time certain things will take to make and implement and we can therefore not plan very far ahead. We obviously try to do that anyways, but due to our inexperience in projects like these we tend to overestimate how many things we can actually put in the game. This week I have tried to look ahead and determine how much we have time to do with only two weeks left to the beta, which needs to be feature complete. We planned initally for two levels with a mini boss after the first one and then also a third level which would function solely as the main boss fight and would take place in a different location then the first two levels. The issue with this is that it is quite a daunting task for five inexperienced game designers to embark on. If we keep on implementing things with the same rate we have so far, there is no chance that we will be able to complete everything we want to complete. Even if we start to implement things at a higher rate, there is a very small chance that we will actually be able to complete it. We of course want the game that we eventually present to be entertaining and polished, so it is more important to finish levels one and two and the mini boss first so that we at least have a game to hand in. If we are able to finish those things in time we can start working on the third level and the final boss. We do have many of the things done, but not implemented, so we do not know how long it will take to make sure they work like they should. To sum this rambling up: We are having problems to figure out the scope and even though I have spent a couple of hours this week on trying to pinpointing it, the only conclusion I can come to is that we will have to wait with level three and the final boss. Maybe I should be a bit more realistic and say now that we will not do it and focus on the first part of the game, but I still want to complete what we planned from the start, and I know that the team wants to do that as well. So for now I am hopeful, but slightly pessimistic. In a couple of weeks we will know how it turned out. Wish us luck! Oskar Nolstedt
