![]() This week I have worked with making something we in our group chose to call “health visual visual”. To be honest I don’t really remember why it got that name, but it is basically the HP of the player. Even though we have instant death when the player gets hit by a projectile, the player gets reborn (often because they want to use a powerup) and in order to balance it out we decided that you can’t be reborn too many times, and the easiest way to showcase this to the player is to have a visual representation of this in some way. The reason why we chose to have something moving around the player was because I did a small animation of snowflakes circling around one of our enemies in order to showcase what powers it had (we never implemented this, but it was just in order to see what it would look like). The group thought the idea of having something to show off the powers you are currently possessing would be a great idea. Since we also had to showcase the lives of the player, we decided orbs would be good, because then we only had to make them change colours. Orbs wasn’t really our first plan, but we had a placeholder in the shape of a circle and realized that it did fit our theme to some extent, plus that it didn’t look too messy on screen. I made the orbs first by making a small circle with a glow around it, but then we discussed it a bit further and decided that we wanted the orbs to look more “alive”, like the health orbs in Diablo. I did this by putting some splatter in the middle of the orb and animating it a bit, to make it look more “deep” and as if there was something going on in the middle of the orb. I made the animation by making a whole layer filled with splatters, and then I pushed the layer slightly in each frame, in order to make it look like the orb was rotating. Furthermore, I made the orbs in different colours, one colour to represent each power. Yellow for electricity, blue for ice, orange/red for fire and then I did one purple for the power you have in the beginning. This was an interesting progress, since I sat and worked on this together with my programmers. They asked questions and I tried implementing what they said in the picture. We are used to working in group, but this time we made it even more together than we usually are and that was good. Since I am fairly new to drawing (I don’t have much experience beforehand) it was nice to have someone coming with thoughts and constructive critique at once. You can see in the top of the post how the animation looked like when it was finished, and here is the spritesheet for the blue one (the three other orbs looked exactly the same but in different colours) :
