This period I choose to focus on my main characters, which I drew in Photoshop. A sketch of one of the characters – the player avatar the moth, is presented above. I started by looking through the mood board to find the feelings conveyed through the experience of the avatar that we wanted to visually convey to the player, the feeling of being alone in a mysterious darkness filled with dangers having lost your children to a treacherous light. I then continued by searching for good references for the moth, and choose a few and started sketching traditionally to find the look I wanted. I made a lot of sketches experimenting with the shape and style to achieve the feeling I was going for. When I had a good enough sketch, I scanned it and started painting in Photoshop. There I continued and took it to the next step, experimenting even more with the size and shape of both the body and the wings till I got what I wanted. I wanted the colours to convey the common theme of exposedness; the feelings of vulnerability, hope and hopelessness. I also wanted the colours to be heavily fantasy inspired like the clear strong colours of the movie Avatar. Since I wanted the fragility and delicacy of the wings to show I choose to paint in low opacity and build the colours layer by layer. My plan is to then make a clear outline and enhanche the difference between body and wings both technically and visually, since contrasts create clarity both through that which differs and that which is similar. That is based on how we humans read and perceive images. Another focus this period has been to try to create and maintain a clear and distinct pipeline through the entire production by keeping track of technical aspects of the graphics work like the resolution and canvas size and having a clear communication with the others in the team, especially the programmers. My ambition is to make sure we have the same style so that the graphics become homogenous and easy to read by the player, and don’t give the impression of an unprofessional game loosing the interest of potential future players/buyers. |
