This week I have been working on a few things, such as the background for the game which is what I am going to talk about this time.

Here is what it looks like at the moment:

I drew this in Photoshop and it took me about three hours. We had an idea about a flying temple in the sky for a level, so that is what I had in mind when I first sketched this up. I wanted something simple, so it is not that cluttered with stuff. It is not finished though, it needs some more shadows and lines on the floor to make it more readable as a floor. I added the dark pillar in front to create a further illusion of depth, which I think will look good when you play it later. I’m also thinking of having the islands in the background have some sort of floating animation, if I have time. Animating the waterfall in the background would also look cool, and some clouds moving around.

We are going to have the player character float around on its own cloud in this flying temple and fight enemies, going further in to the right. I don’t know if it is going to just end, or maybe if you get to a final room with a boss. We will have to see about that.

To further fit the art style of our game I went with very bright colors withot any detailed pieces and very simple shadows. I think this makes it easier to see your enemies and attacks in a shoot ‘em up game. I am however thinking of toning down the colors, since this is supposed to be a world taken over by beasts. Now it looks like a ”before we got attacked by demons” kind of world. I could maybe put some cracks in the pillars and just make the over all mood more dark and gritty.

But, this is how it looks like right now. I am liking it myself so far. It could use some improvements but I enjoy the theme of it.
