GGC

Last weekend we exhibited Anchored at the Gotland Game Conference, and it was a lot of fun. A lot of people played Anchored and we got lots of great feedback and input from a lot of people who played the game. Simply by observing people play provided really useful feedback.

We did find a game breaking bug in the GGC build, which was tied to the tutorial. During the tutorial the player is asked to construct a building. If the player aborts the constructing during the placement phase the tutorial would break and the player could not build another building for the rest of the game. We didn’t patch this during GGC, since this could only happened in the beginning of a play section and there were always someone from our team standing nearby ready to gather feedback or help the players. If someone accidentally triggered the bug we simply told the player that they had to start the game from the beginning, and I don’t think it ruined the experience for the player.

During the award ceremony we won three out of the nine prices that were give out. We won the Cha-ching-award for the most commercial viable product, the best second year project- award and the PWNAGE-award which I think was for the best project on the entire conference! I think that’s crazy! Getting that recognition was really big for me and the team. Especially since we had some tough design challenges during the entire development cycle, which makes me even happier that people seemed to enjoy playing our game. It was really fun to watch people play and hear what they had to say about their play section and the game.

I did manage to make a bit of a fool out of myself when I was going to give some sort of thank you speech when accepting the PWNAGE-award, which was fun. I tried to say something about being extra happy that people liked our game because we had had a bumpy design ride, but the words stopped working, probably because of nervosity. I don’t even know what I said, and the best thing is they filmed and streamed the entire event. Either way it doesn’t matter, it was fun, and just like last year, the after party at GGC was awesome. Meeting and talking to a lot of cool people working in the industry is always very appreciated for my part and the atmosphere amongst every one attending were just brilliant.
