Feedback and Feedback

These past weeks we’ve conducted some playtesting sessions. We had put a lot of focus on our core mechanics. Those being our combat and gathering systems. We also had a lot of graphical assets in the game, with our game as it was we felt that we could test our core.

A lot of the feedback we got were focused on the lack of feedback in the game. There wasn’t any audio and very little visual feedback in the game at that point. Some of the biggest issues were on movement and inventory as well as on combat.

This has been the focus for the last week. We implemented a lot of visual and audio feedback. We added a marker for moving which made it a lot easier for players to see where they were going. The inventory was changed into a bar that filled up as settlers pick things up. And for combat we added a lot of on hit sounds as well as attack sounds and particle effects.

These changes were made in conjunction with a revamping of the UI which would further help players understand the game.

We moved the resources to the top of the screen and made the food resource into a hunger bar that steadily decrease over time. Making hunger a global resource instead of it being for every individual settler. A day and night feature has been added and it is visually represented by a meter in the upper right corner.

Down in the left all selected settlers have their collective inventory and the yellow bar is how much inventory is occupied. In the right there is a button for switching layers as well as a button for construction and the pause menu. In the middle at the bottom there is a tab for each settler the player has. Unselected settlers are moved down until just their name is visible. A settler that is attacked will glow red and pop up a bit indicating that it has been hit, this will only happen if they’re off screen. Selected settlers will move up and display their name, a portrait, health and inventory bar as well as two circles showing the player what gear that settler is wearing.
