BGP week 2: Dialogue writing
|
Hello all! This week we have begun production of Sam and Nicole and so far I have to say things are going pretty good! Emma has been making backgrounds, Lisa has been making character art, Rasmus is doing code prototypes in Ren’Py for random encounters and a map screen, and me and Sigrid have been writing. Here is some art Lisa and Emma have made. It looks great so far!
Personally, I have been focusing on writing dialogue. I have written both larger events and casual conversations between Sam and Nicole. The events are when a classmate, a family member or a stranger comes up to Sam with generally rude comments about her and Nicole’s relationship and/or sexual orientiation. For example, I wrote an event where a classmate comes up to Sam and is disgusted because Sam gets changed in the same locker room as the other girls. The classmate is upset because they think Sam stares at the girls while changing, because she’s a lesbian, and as Sam the player has to choose how to handle the situation. Depending on what they choose, the relationship with this character goes up or down. I divided my conversations between Sam and Nicole in two parts, one where Sam/the player begins the conversation and one where Nicole begins. I made these conversations in Twine as I am customed to the program and it’s easier for me to make branching narratives like this. This is what the two conversation parts look like at the moment.
For the time being, I made twelve comments/questions that the player can ask Nicole. I want these to be randomized so that each time you speak to her only three of these options are available, which will hopefully make the conversation feel more natural and give the player a different experience each time. Nicole has eight comments/questions at the moment. When the player talks to her there is a chance any of them pops up, and the player gets to choose what to answer. These conversations are about things like school, friends, their free time and their hobbies. I’m painfully bad at small talk in real life so I’m hoping it doesn’t feel too stilted. I also want to add some ”deeper” subjects, like what their thoughts on marriage, family and religion are. But I think I’ll save that for next week! |
