Week 1 – Game Background
|
My group and I have chosen to make a game of the Datepocalype concept. During this week I have been working on the background that will scroll down during our game. It will give the sensation of moving forward while the game is running. We had decided on a Mediterranean theme for the city which is why the buildings have an unusual nuance to what we are used to. Another reason to the nuance of the buildings and street is the light source, which is a great green mushroom cloud in the distant. This mushroom cloud is the result of an nuclear power-plant explosion. Because the light source is green the shadows become more purple than black.
![]() We decided to make the background as soon as possible so that we would have at least one test-background for the Alpha-presentation. We have some problems with the dimensions of the background making it feel like the game area is very short and wide, but at least we have a test version. We have some ideas on how to fix that issue and I am going to test those ideas next week and hopefully they will fix the problem. Sense our game will have a looping background I decided to make it simple to connect at the ends and also make it easy to make different variants of the background fast so that each level won’t be monoton. The way I did this was to make a intersection where the picture will be looped so that one half of the intersection is at the top and other half at the bottom. This leaves out any shapes that would have been connected perfectly for the loop to look good. Another thing i did was to make all the buildings the same size and all the shadows is tilted the same. This makes it super easy to move around the buildings and place them in a different order to avoid monotony. Even though every building will have to have two different sets of shadows (depending on if it is first building in the picture or not) I still believe that this a simple and easy way to save time in the future. I also made all the parts of the buildings in a separate layer and can use them to build a new house in a matter om minutes which makes it even easier to avoid a monoton background even though it’s looped.
