Blog week 1: Finalizing boss
|
Hello my name is Theo Bengtsson, this is a blog I will use to document my progress in game-design at Campus Gotland. My group is creating a game based on an giraffe fighting through space, my role as an Art director is to supervise the art direction in the game, I’m primarily in charge of designing the characters, animate them and design other different art-assets for the game. It’s demanding but fun, especially since there are only two people including myself that studies graphics in our group. This first blog week i’ve been working on finishing the design of the boss in the game. When designing the boss I got the guidelines that it was going to be an triangle. The first thing that struck me was: how do you make something in the shape of a triangle funny or recognizable. I started to make a very classical mountain with a pair of jet-thrusters. It looked ominous but it lacked something. The boss needed something to attack with something that goes well with the design. I couldn’t just slap a cannon on top of it, it would look completely nonsensical.
Then the most iconic triangle for me came into mind: The all-seeing eye. This felt completely right, This gave me some idea’s regarding weapons, the boss could use the eye as a weapon. Firing different explosives from his ominous gaze. This gave way for the final boss-design. ![]() The all-seeing eye watching the hero with a deadly gaze. In the final product the boss will have a very ominous feel to it, blocking large parts of the screen to emphasize him. The soft blue colors that the boss has now will also change in the second phase to other colors to further emphasize the boss change in behaviour. Difficulties: The major difficulty for me was the starting point, I did not know where to start and how to proceed from that point. You strive to do an interesting boss. Something more than a ordinary triangle. I was stuck and with the help of one of my team-members who gave me this idea, drawing the boss wasn’t hard, designing the boss was. Overall drawing in digital media isn’t particularly easy for me, I’m very used to draw with pen and paper and drawing in photoshop feels very different. Choosing colors for the boss was also hard, I did not know what kind of theme I wanted the boss to have.
