And so it begins…

Greetings! The following blog entry is my first, in what is to be expected, a great many more. Let us get started…

This week has consisted mainly of getting all the details done before the Alpha testing of our game project. The working title of the game is ”Desolate Echo” and it is adapted from the concept ”Colossus Core”. As my role in the group is Lead QA, there hasn’t been that many chances for me to take on my role yet. So until I can get the chance to do that, I have been keeping myself busy with leveldesign, misc. tiles aswell as getting the layout ready for the implementation into our game.

Just getting the primary map design done had been challenging enough for me, who is a beginner when it comes to digital art. But to then hear that my design is good but that it needed to be reworked so that we could implement it was tough.

First I had to figure out which tunnels and caverns that were worth keeping, before I got started with drawing the blueprint shown above. The amount of caverns and tunnels that would be left intact were determined by number of power-ups, enemeies, and currency we, as a group, decided to have in this level.

Then the work could get started for real with fixing all the walls so that they were straight. This was necessary only because in my hubris as an artist I had forgottten one of the most basic rules of pixelated 2D-games. All tiles are flat.

So to tackle this obstacle I did the only thing that came to mind: I plowed through with my own way and after a couple of hours found myself stuck once again. Only this time the obstacle had grown from a bump in the road to a crevice that split the road in half. Being unable to find a way out of this predicament on my own, I turned to the members of my team in an attempt to get a helping hand. It took them less than two minutes to explain what I had done wrong and how I should procced. Feeling a bit more then just a little stupid at that time, I took their advice and opinions to heart and got to work.

After getting the advice I needed, the map design got done rather quickly. Or at least that is what it seemed like to me.

After this got finished, my main objective of this week were misc. tiles and finalizing the parts of the game design document that I had been assigned.

As I sit here writing this post, there is still work to be done. And if I’m ever going to get some sleep this night, this will have to be the point where I break off for this week.

So have a pleasant weekend all and hopefully we will see another entry here from me, next week.
