1# update spaceshooter

This will be the first post on this project but we are already three weeks in on this project. the project itself is a 2D space shooter titled (at the moment) “space girafaa”, in which the player controls a cybernetic giraffe on a quest to save it’s family.

i work mostly with the art and animation of the game, so this week i was tasked with one of the animations for an interactive item in the game. the “item” so to speak is a special asteroid that will appear randomly in game. Asteroids are used as obstacles in the game but can be blown up, this asteroid however is the so called rainbow asteroid which has special properties. if the rainbow asteroid is destroyed it will blowup and exterminate every enemy on screen.

The animation needed to somewhat different from the other explosions in the game since the item will have a giant impact on the it,  so a standard explosion wouldn’t do the trick. i decided to make the asteroid implode on itself poser exploding outward, kinda like a dying star before it turns in to a black hole. i wanted the steroid to break itself apart and get sucked in towards one single point. The idea reminded me of the end scene from the movie poltergeist where “spoiler alert” the haunted house gets sucked in itself like as if it was pulled through a tiny hole.

The asteroids will start to crack when shoot at until the break so i used that as a starting point. the cracks would start to glow with the asteroids internal energy then start to suck it’s pieces into itself turning it inside out until it is nothing more than a ball off light which would finally disappear until it would later violently explode.

I’m moderately satisfied with how it turned out at least in this stage of development. creating an implosion proved harder than i thought and i failed to find any good references for it. thing i want fixed with this animation before the game is finished is the explosion itself. it looks a bit to generic at this point, and i feel like it needs to be a it cooler. maybe add some more interesting colors keeping with the rainbow theme of the object. But I’ll burn that bridge when i get there.
