Practice, practice
|
Hello there again! I will soon update the blog on my 3D progress. I thought I would upload some of my practice from yesterday meanwhile. I really need to learn the use of colors and putting highlights and shadows on objects. I have the vision, but it is not always so easy to apply. What I mean with that is that you know what you want it to look like, but not the process of getting there, tools, colors, layers, etc. At least I can tell when it´s looking wrong and know what would look right, I do not just know how to get there many times. Highlights on hair for example. You still want the hair to look like it has got some texture, not just a big flat thing on the head. And how to apply highlights then? (Drawn in Photoshop with a Wacom board) I practice to find the best methods of reaching the result I wish for. Here I just “swabbled” aligned with the hair, with a brighter color. Then I used motion blur in the same direction. I had to adjust the lower hair since the upper does not have the exact same direction. For finishing touches i used the “smudge” tool with a very small brush size. I had to adjust the color of the highlights because I made them too bright at first, so the light looked white. Adjusting to the hair color worked way better. I imagined a light source and tried to be consistent when applying bouncing light. Sometimes it helps drawing an arrow in the direction above the character. So here I tried to imagine all the surfaces that would face the light. Where does she have skin that sticks out, like the cheek bones for example. I find clothes the hardest since they are so different depending on material and how it´s bent. Then we have the sides in shade. At the point where anything changes direction, the skin/material will be as darkest. So i applied this as well. (sorry for the bad explanation). One can also use bouncing light from objects, like the colored rectangular behind her for example. I did not get that far yesterday. So what I would like to change in this picture; Adjusting her eyes a bit (something feels off with the pupils even though she is making a face). Work more with her lips and the color of them, as now I think they pout a bit too much. Keep working with her shirt to make the creases and light sources right. Also enhance that she is lifting her shoulders up towards her ears for this gesture with the fabric. And then another polish with the skin to make it “pop” even more. Hope my post made some sense and thank you for reading! And good luck if you give it an attempt |
