This blog will cover the work on Scrap Pirates, a second year project at the Game design program at Uppsala Universitet Campus Gotland.
I am the producer of the group but I am also one of the two people in charge of the level design. The first two week of the project were dedicated to planing the project and writing the Design Document. I did that together with Rebecka Nyström (our Lead design) and we are also the ones working on the level design. This week we started really focusing on the level design, we brainstormed and discussed puzzles and other things relating to the levels.
Halfway into the week I started working in unity, getting to know it a bit better. I started white boxing the beginning of the first level and played around with the mechanics. In the end of the week we got our first real tile sheet done, so I implemented it into the level and looked at how it worked with the players and the background, both in style and colour.
Players stacking boxes to reach a button that will open the dark red door.

Player using magnetism to boost their jump in order to reach the ledge, The player jumps and the turns on the same magnetic field as the white box, which repels him upwards.

One player hanging under a platform by having the opposite magnetic field as his friend activated. This is supposed to be used so that the top player can transport the other player over environmental hazards such as rotating saws.

This is how we planed for this to work during the design process in the beginning. Hopefully we can get it to work well.

This is the part of the level I have done so far. The shape is not a final shape but merely for testing distances and possible puzzles.
