For this course I was selected to be in a group that had already a concept of a 2D casual real-time top-down shooter, production name “MSSP”. The game is catered to players who’ve always dreamed of commanding their own spaceship, build their spaceship from scratch, travel through different solar systems and carry out missions.
The first week of MSSP was mainly focused on creating mood boards and mock-ups to get a greater picture of where we wanted to go artwise.
The moodboard above is centered around the overall feel of the game as well as some inspirations on the artstyle from games such as “monacco” and “spaz”.
We were really hoping to incorporate dynamic lights inside the space ship with normal maps and specular maps on art assets to give the game its own identity.
Here are two mockups on how the scenario of driving your spaceship could look like. Although it doesnt properly illustrate the camera zoom, it does illustrate the artstyle we are going for as well as the different themes/solarsystems will look like. The grey tiles on the bottom left of the spaceship is there to illustrate the hull generation that is supposed to go all around the ship.
