New lava monster

This is the week of our crunch. Next week I plan to dedicate to writing reports and maybe doing some small tweaks on the game. We have made some changes to our gameplay since the property system was not clear enough. Before we had four types of enemies and four types of items and that lead to some confusion. It was clear to most people that ice dealt more damages towards fire and vice versa but the connection between dead and alive was harder to make. We have tried coming up with a solution to this problem but without much luck, therefore we decided to remove dead and alive all together. Now there will be the ice monster and the lava monster, and they will take critical damage from each others opposites. They will also take zero damage from their own type of item, for example hot item versus lava monster. The dead and alive items will now count as neutral items and deal half of what a critical hit deals. This will make it less complicated and therefore make the game more enjoyable, at least that is what we hope.

We have also gotten a lot of critique on the lava monster, people think it does not look like lava. When designing it I tried to keep it consistent with our style and did not use that much contrast in the colors, which is probably why it does not look like something that is very hot. Because of this, we decided it was best to redo the lava monster all together.

This time i decided to go really high contrast, while still trying to keep it from clashing too much with the rest of the graphics. I looked a lot at references of lava and of other kind of fire elemental monsters to try to create something that looked intensely hot. I decided to go with a really dark blue for the body with a bunch of cracks that will pulsate with hot red and yellow colors. I considered adding a glow to the cracks, because i think it would strengthen the lava feeling, but decided not to because I felt it would stray too much from our graphical style. Technically it is built up the same way as the other monsters, with different layers for different body parts.

I think this lava monster will in a better way portray something very hot and fiery, and will therefore create a better connection to the cold items. Animations for the monster is coming soon.
