Space Shooter Project Blog: Post #5
|
For this post I will cover the cryopod asset present of the ship of our game. This will replace the beds I created previously, as they simply didn’t fit thematically nor with the narrative I myself wrote for the game. Go figure. Either way, this is the process of the cryopod creation. Since I knew one of our cinematic images had portrayed a cryopod as displayed in the picture above, I figured this was as good a place to start as any. Also, by attempting to replicate the pod, the images would be tied to the graphics in the game and would also save me the time of trying to desing one from scratch. Well, that’s not entirely true, since the shot of the pod only covers a part of it, so I had to imagine what the rest of it looked like. My initial design looked something like this: The colors are mostly flat, that is entirely covered in one single value. Textures have been applied to the image, but it still adds very little at this point. It’s really only visible close up, but it helps me to distinguish the material when working and have an idea of what the result will look like. This was also my first time trying to add lighting to glass, so I might have messed that up entirely. What follows is the next step of the creation, when I applied lighting to it. The level of detail is not really what matters to me, as much as being able to destinguish the object. As you can probably tell, my shading skills are not the best (especially not when it comes to the glass), but when it is shrunken down to the size the game requires, smaller details are often lost. That’s why, if I wanted to make details, I’d have to make them really stand out. Case and point; the thermometer. Now, this panel is going to appear very small in the game, and as such, has had very little detail assigned to it. I wanted the thermometer to really stand out as a feature on the cryopod, so I had make it thicker than it would realistically be relative to the panel. Before it was too slim, so the colors would get mashed into a single line, which destroyed the purpose of it, as you can probably tell from the previous picture. Below is the finished version that will appear in the game, unless I’m forced to remake it once again. That’s it for this week. Bye for now! |
