Week 7, Game Design
|
So, this week I am still working on the soundtrack for our game. I was gravely mistaken on the time it would take to actually make a soundtrack from scratch. Since I am making the soundtrack in three different stages, meaning that I will divide the song into three parts even tho they have the same basic sound, it is harder and I cant just pick a song. This is so that the programmer can set when the song will change due to given state in game (fail state or winning state). The start will be calm for the learning stage so that the player wont get stressed and can learn without stress. The second will be a bit more fast paced and also the part played throughout level 1. And finally even more stressful and a bit more metallic when the player is close to failure. The metallic is to symbolize the industrialized goblins wanting to take over the forest. Last sprint I managed to fix the victory soundtrack , game over soundtrack , the ordering seed and seed ready sound effects. I realized that I had no idea what the sound effects should be like even tho I figured out the attributes. Finally I went with a card sound for the seeds, since they are visually presented as cards in the menu. Last sprint I estimated that the soundtrack for the level would take around 5 hours. I can not tell you how wrong I was. I have been working with it for at least 20 hours now and it is still not ready. It is all about understanding the program, finding the sounds and finally testing it out with different ways. I know every project needs research but it gets a little frustrating after spending so many hours and still not having any work to show for it. So my plan is to just spend as much time as possible, fail fast and move on and hopefully get the soundtrack somewhat ready before next sprint on Monday. When i am making the soundtrack I use Fruity Loops. It is all about putting the sounds together with the right rhythm and pitch. As you can see on the picture above i have to chose a sound in the menu to the right. Then I can chose to put a lot of sounds together and create a loop in the tool that the red text is pointing to. And finally place the sound in the tracks to the left. The loop creating tool was a bit hard to understand. I do not think that I got it quite still but I have learned enough to be able to put something together using the program. Safe to say there are a lot of effects I wont be using since it is way to complex for me to learn during the sprint. |
