The Splash Screen

Hello Magic Writer fans!

This week I am going to talk about the splash screen for our game. The splash screen is a screen that shows up in the beginning sort of like a loading screen. A splash screen is a graphics consisting of a window containing an image, a logo and the current version of the software. A splash screen usually appears while a game or program is launching.  Splash screens cover the entire screen or are simply a rectangle near the center of the screen or page.

Since our game is not big enough to require any lengthy loading, we call it a splash screen instead of a loading screen. It will also have information on how to play the game as is common in loading screens of bigger games today. I made two iterations on this and it still needs some tidying up. The idea behind the splash screen that I wanted to implement was that you should not have to read a lot and that pictures should guide the players on how  to play. So I used as few words as I could without hindering getting the message across.

I have first made one splash screen with all the information on, but the lead design wanted me to break it up in two parts and then have a button for next splash screen. I agreed that would be better, we wanted the controls on one screen and the weakness system on the other. I have yet to make the weakness system splash screen satisfying, it needs some more iterations. It should be clear by just looking at the items, monsters and arrows.

I used the same font and color for the font as we have in the rest of the game. The first issues that got apparent as I started working was that it was hard to make the text sit right. It was either not easy to read or the it just looked bad. This is the first time working on something like this so I tried looking on other games for inspiration. Not much came up, flash games practice this type of thing pretty often. But many of them did not look very good.

In the end I just went with the same brush as for our game background, then I used the signs that we have for menus and stretched them out.

This is the WiP splash screen:
