Space Shooter Project Blog: Post #4

I’m back again, with more props for the game. As a level designer without any levels to make, I have been relocated to creating props for our levels instead. This time, I will show of my two first props this week, the fire extinguisher and the beds, which can be seen below.

Bed Extinguisher

These props are both relatively simple in design. The extinguisher was the first prop I made, and I will now cover the design process.

Extinguisher Full Size

I started by simply making a circle to represent the extinguisher itself. There really isn’t much to be told about this prop, since it’s all very obvious to one who has seen a fire extinguisher. A holder to keep it in place and the standard red that is associated with fire extinguishers as well as emergencies. Above is an image of it in its full size. Moving on to the beds. Here is where I could play around a bit more.

Bed Full Size

The start was a simple rectangle followed by a rounded rectangle within it to represent a mattress. Since the atmosphere we’re going for in our game is a pretty depressing one, I didn’t want to make a traditional, clean, white mattress. By making it more grey, it suits the depressing feeling. The pillow and sheet have to be drawn into zero gravity, as the artificial gravity on the space ship where this game takes place has been disabled. As such, I tried to draw the sheet in an awkward way as if it were hovering besides the bed, and in that regard I feel I have succeeded. The pillow however I’m still not entirely sure how to place, so I left it in the typical position for the time being. I will discuss this with my group later on.

Bunk Full Size

I also made this second version of the same bed, now reconstructed as a bunk. I have removed the sheets here, until I can determine where to put them. Anyway, for this object, I simply duplicated the bed and placed the bottom layer somewhat to the side to make it obvious that it isn’t just one bed. However, by doing so, there was a conflict in the layers, where textures would overlap and destroy the image. So after about half an hour of trying to arrange the layers properly and erasing the parts that overlapped, the end result looked like the version above. The ladder was added last, and it consists entirely of rectangles created with the photoshop tool, like most of the props I’ve made so far. Very few things do I actually need to draw by hand. The pillow and bedsheet are examples of this.

That’s what I have to show for right now, more stuff like this is currently being worked on. See ya.
